Mount Rainier is a nature artist's treasure trove of photo opps. This little guy is one of two native species of chipmunk seen in the park and was busy enough eating to hold still for a photo. The Latin name is Tamias townsendii of the family Sciuridae, which inspired the silly name I've chosen for this watercolor painting. One mustn't take oneself too seriously when painting such a creature, which some say represents playfulness, among other things.
After I finished the painting, my cat delivered one to me still alive, if stunned, and I had a chance to interact with it for several minutes while I made sure it wasn't injured. It was a precious moment, petting and holding close this elusive animal. I was able to look it in the eye at length as it seemed to look back at me calmly, and I remembered that what we focus on keenly is likely to appear in our lives. Therefore, the decision NOT to paint a cougar, which was my next intended project, has been put on hold indefinitely. ;)
Choose from several options for wall display. Click on "1 Medium" and hover over the tiny ? icon at the top of each for a description.
To match the look of the original painting, choose Watercolor Fine Art Paper as the Medium. Note thaton your monitor or device it may appear bright white but is actually a natural white, unbleached cotton paper. If you choose to add a mat, it will also be a natural white color that blends well with the paper.
The original was painted on Arches hot press cotton rag paper using Winsor & Newton professional watercolors.
